Experienced chefs know, there's nothing like using a mortar and pestle to release the maximum flavor from your herbs and spices. You see, grinding your ingredients rather than simply chopping them not only improves the consistency of your dish, it also lets you coax more flavor from them.
Outside of meal preparation, this tool is also useful for preparing herbal ointments or incense. Just be aware that you should not use the same set for this as you use for food preparation. We recommend using one set in the kitchen, and another for any non-edible applications.
The Celtic Mortar and Pestle is made of food safe soapstone. A simple twisted braid forms a border around the bowl of this unusual mortar. It stands 2 1/2" high, with a bowl 4" across.
Which one is the mortar, and which one is the pestle? You'd be surprised how often this question comes up. It is so often referred to in a single breath, that most people never stop to question which one is which. The bowl shaped piece is the mortar, and the piece that's shaped like a tiny club is the pestle.
How should I care for my mortar and pestle? After use, hand wash your mortar and pestle with soap and warm water. Allow it to dry thoroughly before using it again, especially if you are using it with dry ingredients. Do not place in dishwasher.
I'm extremely pleased with this Celtic Mortar and Pestle. You can tell right away that it is well crafted and high quality. It's every bit as beautiful as the picture shows. My nephew is studying to be a pharmacist and this will make the perfect gift for him.
