  Tapestry Cloak from Gryphon's Moon

Tapestry Cloak

To get your creative juices flowing, we've got a set of simple instructions on how to make a cloak from a tapestry/bedspread. The instructions are free, and the finished cloak is great for Mabon, Halloween, or any time you feel like dressing up. Please feel free to share the link with your friends.

Step 1 - Start with a double (full) size tapestry in whatever design you prefer. Fold it in quarters. If you lay your yardstick along the short edge, it should measure approximately 42".

Step 2 - Now you're going to make a circle out of that rectangle of fabric. Place your yardstick so that the 0" mark is at the corner that would actually be the center of the fabric if you opened it up. Now swing the yardstick around so that it acts like the radius of your circle. Begin cutting at the other corner (not the center), always aiming at the 42" mark on the yardstick.

Step 3 - As you near the yardstick, stop and readjust it. It is very important that the end of the yardstick always stays right at the center corner of the fabric.

Step 4 - Just a few more inches to go...

Step 5 - If you unfolded the fabric now, you'd have a complete circle... but don't unfold it yet!

Step 6 - Now we're going to add a neck hole. You're going to repeat essentially the same process that you did to get your large circle, except on a much smaller scale. This time, your radius will only be 3".

Step 7 - Swing the yardstick as you cut, leaving the 3" mark lined up on the corner.

Step 8 - This is what you should end up with.

Step 9 - Now partially unfold the fabric so that you have a semi-circle.

Step 10 - Only one more cutting step. Slide your scissors between the two layers of fabric on one side of your semi-circle, and cut from the neck hole to the edge of your large circle. This is the front opening of your cloak.

Step 11 - When you unfold it completely, it should look something like this...

Step 12 - Now for the sewing. It's really just one long line that goes all the way around the bottom hem, front openings and neck hole. Pick a spot to start anywhere along the edge. Fold the fabric over about 3/8", once, and then once more. Folding it over twice like this will hide your raw edges so you won't have to worry about raveling edges. Go slowly, and ease in the extra fabric as you go so you won't get big wrinkles sewn into the fabric.

Step 13 - When you come to a corner, just fold over the new edges before you get to them, and continue sewing right on around them. It will seem like it's taking forever to get all the way around the cloak. Don't worry. That's normal for a full-circle cloak. If you want an even more finished look, sew around the edges one more time, this time right at the edge of the hem, just out from where you sewed on the fold. This second line of stitching isn't really necessary. It just makes the hem lie a bit flatter.

Step 14 - A small cloak clasp is a nice finishing touch, or you can sew in ties (shoelaces work well) or whatever closure suits your fancy.
